What is Cystitis?

Basically having cystitis means that your bladder is inflamed. This is often caused by e-Coli bacteria getting into the bladder. Which can be particularly common in women because they have a shorter urethra than men.

What causes Cystitis?

Cystitis is caused when bacteria get inside the urethra and make their way up into the bladder. That means you can help minimize, or prevent it entirely by being particularly careful with this area.

For example, not using perfumed soaps and wiping front to back can help. As well as wearing underwear that is cotton, rather that man-made fibres, and avoiding being intimate while you are suffering the symptoms.

Treating mild cases

Having Cystitis isn’t necessary to cause for concern, in fact, mild cases usually take care of themselves within 4-9 days. However, you can do things to help flush out your system and make yourself more comfortable.

For instance, many people swear by cranberry juice. But there is some confusing evidence on whether this technique actually works or not. Some scientists believe that there are elements in it, that help to neutralise the acidity in the urine. So making it more comfortable to pass water.

Whereas other scientists believe that it’s just the consumption of any large amount of liquid that makes it easier on the sufferer.

Treating chronic cases

However, some cases of cystitis are more problematic. These are the chronic cases where they don’t clear up of their own accord. This usually means that they need a course of antibiotics to cure them. Which you can get from your doctors.
